Honda car title shows it was scrapped

Imagine going to obtain registration for your car and the bureau of motor vehicles informs you that the car was scrapped and no longer in existence. You are unable to sell an old car if the title record indicates it is has been destroyed. Apparently there was a mix-up among someone who buys scrap cars or handles vehicle removal somewhere down the line. On November 25, 2014 there was an article on Channel 8 Woodtv.com by Henry Erb titled ‘Target 8 helps bring ghost car back to life’ with the following highlights: “Colleen Willey looked sadly at the 1993 Honda Accord she loves; but the Michigan Secretary of State doesn’t think so. It has her car listed as scrapped. The Fruitport woman found that out when she tried to renew her registration. Willey bought the Honda in 2013 from a Ravenna car dealer. At the time, the title was clear & put in her name. But something happened after she bought it. Another title showed up that listed her car was scrapped at a yard on Chicago Drive in Wyoming. The Secretary of State’s branch office tried to help Willey. Workers there made phone calls trying to find out what happened, but got nowhere. On paper, her Honda does not exist, but it’s still sitting in her driveway. Without proper registration, Willey isn’t allowed to drive the Honda on Michigan roads. She has been bumming rides and borrowing a car to get to work for three months. Target 8 investigators went to Dusty’s on Chicago Drive to ask some questions. A man who wouldn’t identify himself said there wasn’t a chance that the scrap yard workers failed to match the title to the car when they bought it. It does appear there was an error regarding the ’93 Honda, likely due to being confused with the ’92 Honda owned at one point by the same person. He provided a form that Willey will have to fill out. She will have to get a police officer to verify the VIN number on her car, and then the Secretary of State will bring her ghost Honda back to life.”
